| The performance and economic benefits from heteroses has driven the cow-calf industry to utilize crossbreeding. If properly implemented, this can result in a 21 percent improvement in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed.
However, crossbreeding in many Midwestern herds does not approach this percent improvement. This reduction is a result of mismatings of same breeds and sire-daughter matings to prevent turning bulls over continually. Using carefully chosen replacement heifers will allow the cow-calf breeder to continue to use the same bulls for a maximum number of years. |
