| Most cow herds in the Midwest are managed as single groups, and producers would just as soon not run several breeds of bulls to maximize heterosis and to produce replacement heifers. The swine industry has moved almost exclusively to purchasing highly productive and prolific gilts. Thus, in the future, cow-calf producers will move to purchasing their replacements. This will allow for the use of single breed sires for extended periods of time and result in maximum heterosis and profit. However, finding these replacement heifers that have superior genetics and from a verified health program is difficult.
Unsicker Farms has spent a large amount of time and money buying high performance, moderate frame, optimum EPD herd sires to produce these heifers. Herd sires utilized include the pick of high indexing Angus and Gelbvieh bulls. These sires have been purchased at the IPT Bull Sale in Illinois, the sandhills of Nebraska, and the south central part of South Dakota. Semen is also purchased from some of the best sires of these breeds. |
